The date is May 1. I am Debbie Guerrero, a student at the University of Washington, working on
the Washington Women's Heritage Project. Today I'm conducting an oral history interview with
Lindsay Buxton, who is presently residing in Seattle, Washington. This interview is taking place
in her home there. This is tape number six, interview three.

It's very hard right now. My 39 year old son is slowly dying of lung cancer. I'm told that I'm
brave, sometimes I think I am, but... so, that kind of pain, hurt. But we always say, you know,
back to the occupation of Fort Lawton, we had to do what we had to do, and one of the warriors
said, Any day is a good day to die. I believe this for myself. It's been a little hard to believe this
for someone so young, your own children, but I think-- I think he's at peace, and I think for
whatever time he has left in his life, it's still going to be useful, still going to be productive, and
his life had great meaning, and we're all learning something from his pain. I guess the strength--
my grandmother's-- I was named after her, I believe that her spirit, you know, is helping me, and
I have a very strong Buddhist philosophy that carries me through. And life is a gift, and I
strongly believe in reincarnation. My son will go on to the other side and he will come back. But
I do know that he will always live in my heart, so he's never really going to die.

Debbie Guerrero 02:33
Yeah, yeah.

Lindsay Buxton 02:36
But thank you.

Debbie Guerrero 02:36
Thank you, your life is a gift. Thank you for all of our time together.

Lindsay Buxton 02:44
I wish you well in school.

Debbie Guerrero 02:46
Thank you.

I want to see you be that lawyer, that Native woman legislator [laughs].

Debbie Guerrero 02:53
I'll be there.

Lindsay Buxton 02:53
All right!

Debbie Guerrero 02:55
I will. That's my vision.

Lindsay Buxton 02:57
Okay, good. So we both close with a vision.

Debbie Guerrero 03:00
I love you.

Lindsay Buxton 03:01
I love you too [laughs].
